Another Successful January Thaw - Local Realtor supports community efforts

Sanford, Maine (Grassroots Newswire) 02/05/2025 -- “There is ALWAYS a January Thaw was something my mother always reminded us as children” said Elias Thomas – Broker/Owner of EXIT Key Real Estate in Shapleigh.  Thomas continued, “Since 2022, I have had the honor and pleasure of not only chairing the JANUARY THAW event for the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club, but also being one of the primary sponsors for it.”

In cooperation with the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club, EXIT Key Real Estate has worked to assist the Sanford Housing Authority, as well as the Sanford Police Department in supporting those in the community, who are unhoused.  The JANUARY THAW event, brings local together for an evening of great food and refreshment, but also the opportunity for guests to provide warm clothing for those less fortunate in the community.  This year was no exception.

On Tuesday, January 14^th, more than seventy-five people gathered at the MEE-D-THAI Restaurant in Sanford.  Literally dozens of warm coats and jackets, hats, mittens, gloves, scarves and warm socks were collected at the event and then transported to the police department for distribution, as needed. 

Guests heard from Eric Small, Chief of the Sanford Police Department, Diane Gerry Small, director of the Sanford Housing Authority, as well as a teacher who shared the stories of two unhoused students, who are working to put their lives back together, after living outside in the cold weather.

Thomas concluded, “Each year, including this one, we are pleased to have raised an annual net of $10,000 to donate to this very important cause.”  He hopes that in 2026, the FIFTH ANNUAL JANUARY THAW will raise a total of $15,000.

Rotarians and Guests make a difference

Shapleigh, ME (Grassroots Newswire) 01/26/2024 -- Following nearly twenty-four hours of a snow storm, some eighty guests, made up of Rotarians and friends, braved the cold and joined together at the third annual January Thaw, held recently at MEE D THAI Restaurant in Sanford.  Guests, coming from as far away as North Carolina and central Massachusetts,  arrived with armloads of winter jackets and coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, socks, mittens and hats to be distributed to those in need by folks from the Sanford Police Department and the Sanford Housing Authority.

Elias Thomas, president of the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club and broker/owner of EXIT Key Real Estate – the primary sponsor of the event, welcomed guests to the event. “With such an outpouring of support, I am confident that we will surpass the results of the two previous years, when we raised $10,000 each year.” Thomas continued, “It is gratifying to see so many hearty souls brave the cold and the winds to support the unhoused population in our community.”

Presentations were made by Sergeant Colleen Adams, Mental Health Officer and Lacey Bailey, OPTIONS Liaison for the Police Department. They both shared stories of the tragic situations faced by some of those who are unhoused in the community. “With some 200 unhoused in Sanford, the challenges sometimes are monumental, but with assistance from groups like the Rotary Club and its supporters, we are able to manage.”

Following the event, members of the Rotary Club and Sergeant Adams and Officer David Randt, joined Heather Beaupre and Elias as they distributed literally dozens of warm coats and other items.  Some of those who are served by this program were at the Sanford Warming Center and assisted in carrying the many armloads of items into the center for sorting and distribution. 

The final number is not in as yet, but more than $12,000 will be shared with the program.  A portion of every transaction fee received by EXIT Realty Corp. International is applied to charity and that money is distributed through the Spirit of EXIT Charitable Fund.  EXIT Realty Corp. EXIT Franchisee to Return to India Serving to Change Lives

Shapleigh, ME (Grassroots Newswire) February 4, 2021 -- Earlier this week, Elias Thomas – Broker/Owner of EXIT Key Real Estate in Shapleigh, Maine, received official word from The Rotary Foundation that the grant application he and the Rotary Club of Sanford-Springvale (Maine) and the Rotary Club of Delhi Megapolis, INDIA, has been approved.  The grant will fund the construction of a water catchment dam in the remote area of Samra, in the state of Rajasthan.  The total grant is $40,238 and this amount will completely pay for the construction costs

Beginning in 2001, Thomas traveled to India with other Rotarians from around the world to immunize children against Polio.  In 2014, thanks to the efforts of Rotarians and the World Health Organization, India was declared and certified Polio-Free.  In 2010, Thomas broadened his attention to “safe water” and continued to lead teams of Rotarians and Friends of Rotary to India for the construction of water catchment dams, not only in the jungle areas of Rajasthan, but also in The Punjab and in the state of Gujerat.

When asked why he does this, Thomas answered, “The culture here at EXIT is all about serving others, and this is the way I can do my small part.”  Thomas was one of the principal speakers at the EXIT Convention held in Nashville, Tennessee in 2019, where he shared many of his experiences with the 1,500 EXIT real estate professionals who attended the convention.

In 2020, EXIT Realty Corp. International’s Chief Operating Officer, Erika Gileo, joined Thomas and the rest of the members of the Rotary Dream Team – India 2020, where the group actually worked, hands-on, alongside local laborers in the construction of two catchment dams. Gileo stated, “When Elias spoke about this worthy cause at our annual convention in 2019 with such passion and devotion, I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of his next Dream Team.  The experience was one of the most rewarding of my life and I hope to be able to return again in the future.”

In all, the Dream Team has been responsible for raising the funds for and the construction of about thirteen dams.  This project has helped to bring safe, clean water to over 75,000 villagers.

EXIT Realty’s Elias Thomas Receives National Good Neighbor Award

Shapleigh, ME – The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) recently honored Elias Thomas III, Broker/Owner of EXIT Key Real Estate in Shapleigh, Maine, with its 2018 Good Neighbor Award.  Thomas was recognized with four other REALTORS from among more than a million real estate professionals for his work with Rotary International.

As a child, Thomas encountered the devastating effects of polio when both his best friend and caregiver contracted the disease. Local Realtor Marks Milestone in Polio Eradication Effort

Shapleigh, ME (Grassroots Newswire) January 13, 2014 -- Today, Elias Thomas, Broker/Owner of EXIT Key Real Estate has reason to celebrate. As of today, January 13, 2014, India is officially declared POLIO FREE! This means that in the past three years, not one single new case of polio has been diagnosed in all of India.

Beginning in January 2001, when serving as Rotary District Governor for Rotary Clubs in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, Thomas traveled to India for the first time to participate in the NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION DAY (N.I.D.) against polio.  Having been exposed to polio first at the age of four years when a classmate was stricken with polio, and then again at the age of six when the woman who cared for him and his three older sisters also was stricken with polio and lived out the remainder of her life confined to an "iron lung", Thomas had always wanted to "do something to help others avoid the ravages of polio".

Since that first trip to India, Rotary volunteers from around the world joined hundreds of thousands of local volunteers throughout India. Thomas has returned to India each year to lead teams of Rotarians both to continue the eradication effort and to assist with service work projects to benefit local villages in remote areas of India.

Local Real Estate Agency Hosts Blood Drive

Helping to build the "blood bank" in Southern Maine

Thomas said, "We were not sure how successful this event would be, but we were willing to try.  We had more than a dozen "walk-ins", as well as pre-registered donors, and according to the Red Cross staff members, this was a very successful event!"
