EXIT Realty Foothills Promotes Pool Safety
7 Pool Safety Tips
La Verne, CA (Grassroots Newswire) May 19, 2011 -- Summer is just around the corner and if you have a pool, it is time to think about pool safety. While it is fun to cool off by taking a few laps and splashing around the pool, accidents happen every year. It is important when gearing up for swimming season to make sure you take preventative measures with protecting your pool users. Pillar to Post provided some helpful guidelines for homeowners with pools, and we thought these were worth promoting. Here are some tips:
1. This one should be obvious but there should be an experienced swimmer present when anyone is using the pool.
2. Another obvious tip is the pool should be enclosed on all sides with a fence. What may not be so well known is the fence needs to be at least 5 feet high and if there are guard rails, the span should not be more than 4 inches wide. Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. It should also open away from the pool and the latch should be inaccessible to small children. You could also have an alarm set up on the gate.
3. When young children are playing in or around the pool and adult should always be present, near the pool. Looking over them through a window or door is not good enough.
4. Diving should be restricted to in-ground pools with diving boards and sufficient water-depth. Only dive hands first or jump in feet first.
5. Children should be kept away from pool filters and the surrounding pool area should be free of objects that could be stepped on. And of course, walk, don’t run around the pool.
6. Old drain covers should be replaced with anti-vortex drain covers. It is possible people with long hair or small children can get stuck in the old drains.
