Hidden Murals Uncovered at Historic Kirkwood

Des Moines, IA (Grassroots Newswire) August 30, 2016 --Crews working to renovate the Kirkwood Hotel uncovered some amazing murals recently. While removing plaster in the 12th floor hallway of the Kirkwood, workers discovered a painted mural of the Iowa state capital. Upon further inspection, they also found murals in the hallways of floors eleven, ten and eight.

Timothy Schutte, Owner of EXIT Realty Capital City and new owner of The Kirkwood, commented "The Kirkwood has long been a part of Downtown Des Moines, having first been built in 1867. Discovering these treasures was thrilling, and we are excited at the prospect of bringing the murals back to life." 

The murals were apparently painted between the years of 1981 and 1991, but were covered when the hotel was converted to apartments in the mid-nineties.  Additional murals were discovered in storage, and once they are restored, will be reinstalled in The Kirkwood's grand lobby.
