NAREB Launches Groundbreaking Black Developers Academy

Initiative Seeks to Create Diverse Representation & Neighborhood Revitalization

Phoenix, AZ (Grassroots Newswire) 4/5/2024 - Laya Gavin, a distinguished real estate broker known for her volunteerism in Arizona Realtor Associations as a Board of Director and participation on several committees, has been selected as a member of the prestigious inaugural cohort group of the Black Developers Academy. This esteemed appointment recognizes Laya's commitment to advancing minority homeownership and fostering excellence within the real estate industry.

The Black Developers Academy, a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), aims to empower and support Black real estate professionals in their pursuit of professional growth and community impact. This program is one of a kind and the brain-child of NAREB President, Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose, who is herself a second generation commercial broker and developer with George E Johnson Properties.  Through comprehensive training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, members of the Black Developers Academy will gain invaluable skills and insights to drive positive change in their communities.

"I am deeply honored to be chosen as a member of the inaugural cohort," said Laya. "This opportunity not only reflects my desire to promote minority homeownership but also aligns with my mission to serve and uplift underserved communities through real estate."  The stark underrepresentation of minorities that operate as developers begins with lack of capital and the challenges of access to seed money to launch projects.

The expansion plans outlined by NAREB are poised to accelerate the impact of the Black Developers Academy significantly. Following the graduation of the initial cohort in 2024, the program aims to expand its reach to 20 states, with 50 participants each, in the subsequent year. This ambitious growth strategy underscores NAREB's unwavering commitment to empowering Black real estate professionals nationwide and driving sustainable change in the housing market.

As a member of the inaugural cohort, Laya looks forward to leveraging this unique platform to amplify minority voices in real estate, foster inclusive economic development, and pave the way for a more equitable future.
