Pan Ohio Hope Ride

Hilliard , Ohio (Grassroots Newswire) 04/07/2010 -- Ed Aquino, a local area Realtor like many of us knew someone who knew someone who had a family member, friend or co-worker who had been affected by the devastating effects of Cancer. Then in 2007 this reality hit closer to home when Ed’s mother Carmen Aquino was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Ed’s mom a Registered Nurse detected a lump on her breast. Carmen Aquino now 73, had a lumpectomy right away followed by several treatments of chemotherapy. Carmen has now been in remission for over three years.

After his mom’s fight with Cancer, Ed felt the need to do something to raise awareness and help others hopefully never having to hear those three devastating words “YOU HAVE CANCER”.

Ed an avid bicyclist decided to put his skills and physical fitness abilities to a test by joining The Pan Ohio Hope Ride, a grueling 328 + mile, 4 day bicycle ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati, with shorter courses available that serves as a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program.

The Hope Lodges provided free of charge accommodations for cancer patients and their families in a home-like environment near treatment facilities. There are currently 27 Hope Lodges in 18 states, Ohio currently has two Hope Lodges, one each in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Aquino hopes that with the money that is raised through the efforts of the Pan Ohio Riders that someday Columbus will be able to have a facility that will serve the residents of Franklin County and surrounding areas.

The first Pan Ohio Hope Ride took place in 2007 drawing approx 64 riders, 91 riders in 2008, and over 250 riders in 2009. Participating Cyclist in this event pay a $150.00 registration fee. This year’s event will take place July 29^th to August 01.
