4 Ways to Market your Home to Generation Y

La Verne , CA (Grassroots Newswire) 1/19/2011 --According to WSJ.com, Gen Y does not want their parents’ homes. Why is it important to know what Gen Y wants? With most of consumerism focused on the Baby Boomers, it may shock you to learn that Gen Y actually outnumbers the Baby Boomer generation. Born between 1980 – 2000, there is roughly 80 million in this group opposed to 76 million Baby Boomers. Sellers if you are trying to target the Gen Y generation, here are a few tips!

  1. They want to walk. Tell them all the things they can walk to near the home you are selling, the park, stores, schools, or public transportation. Surveys have reviled that 13% take carpools, 7% walk to work and 88% want to be in an urban setting. Since city prices are too expensive for most of them, suburban places with good shopping, transit, and dining will do just fine.
  2. No lawn mowing! They want outdoor spaces but it needs to be a place to have a party. Think about bringing the living room outside. Fire pits and BBQs are important. They want a place to congregate.
  3. Amenities, Amenities, Amenities! Show them how there are fun features in the home that make their life easier. A special drawer for hair dryers, or an interesting feature in the kitchen. Maybe a little nook in the laundry room for the dog or a place to workout close by are also a good ideas.
  4. No more bathtubs. Gen Y would prefer a bigger shower than to have a bathtub. This is mainly because they are waiting longer to get married and have kids, so they have no reason for a bath tub.

The recession has had an impact on the new generation and it will affect how they buy for years to come. They want to live in a community of friends, not a big home. Show them how to create that community with the home you have for sale, and you are successfully marketing to generation Y.
