Durango, CO (Grassroots Newswire) 5/3/2021 -- John Gillam of EXIT Realty Home & Ranch brokers the sale of the Historic Strater Hotel in downtown Durango, making this one of the largest and most impactful commercial sales in Durango’s history.  After 95 years of ownership, the Barker family has sold the beloved Strater Hotel.  Originally purchased by the Barker family in 1926, the Strater Hotel has become a Durango staple, bringing in visitors from all over the world. 

When mentioning Durango, people typically know us by two things, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Strater Hotel.  The Hotel takes its guests back to a time in history where cowboys rode down Main Ave and the Railroad was still used to transport goods to neighboring mining towns.  Adored by tourists and locals, many people enjoy having a great meal and listing to live music at The Office Spiritorium, The Mahogany Grille, or the Diamond Belle Saloon and participating in some of the many events hosted at this Historic Hotel.

New Owner, Ross Garrett, considers Durango his second home and has always wanted to own a part of its history.  “We don’t want to change anything.  In my view, this place can’t be more perfect.  It’s the real stuff, and I know how important this place is to Durango,” Garrett.  While Mr. Garrett has multiple businesses and investment properties throughout the US, he has trusted Gillam to assist with his acquisitions in SW Colorado for several years, based on his knowledge of ranch, commercial and other investment properties and his love and expertise of the Southwest Colorado. While the Strater Hotel was not on the market, Mr. Barker said he would entertain an offer, and based on Gillam’s approach and experience, also trusted him to help transact the sale, allowing him to coordinate with both sides.

John Gillam is a 3^rd generation real estate broker, has been in the industry for over 20 years and has twice received the Distinguished Service Award in his local association.  He has experience in general residential, commercial, and farm/ ranch real estate through SW Colorado and NW New Mexico. He is also a national real estate instructor, holding a Gold Standard Instructor designation from the national Real Estate Educators Association.
