LOCAL REALTOR ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF INTERNATIONAL PROJECT
EXIT Broker-Owner Goes International
Shapleigh, ME (Grassroots Newswire) October 24, 2011 -- Elias Thomas, Broker-Owner of EXIT Key Real Estate in Shapleigh, ME, just received word that a project he initiated in conjunction with The Rotary Foundation has been completed. For the past ten years, Thomas has led groups of Rotarians to India for two purposes – first, to participate in National Immunization Days against Polio (N.I.D.s) which are part of the only corporate project of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and second, to serve as common laborers working alongside local laborers in various service work projects.
In 2009, Thomas led two groups of Rotarians from six different countries to a remote Muslim village, named Chahalka. Previously, Thomas’ teams had constructed washing platforms for the women and girl children of the village to be able to wash clothing, eating and cooking utensils, etc., without polluting the local drinking water supply. In addition, the ROTARY DREAM TEAMS converted a vacant government building into a computer training center and a day-care center. The project in 2009 required considerable funds for the construction of a toilet block complex. The women and girl children of Chahalka (near Sohna and about a two hour drive from Delhi) have up until now, been unable to conduct their toilet and bathing practices with any privacy, and very often several kilometers from the village.
With the financial help from Rotarians and Rotary Clubs from the United States, Canada, England, France, Australia and India, as well as the obtaining of a Matching Grant from The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, funding was secured. The ROTARY DREAM TEAM assisted in the excavation of the vacant lot and the construction of the exterior walls of the toilet block. The facility consists of about two dozen private toilets and about the same number of showers. Those using the facility will pay the equivalent of one dollar per year for use.
Thomas said, “It was very gratifying for me to receive photographs from the inauguration of the Chahalka Toilet Block from fellow Rotarians, Vikram Sahny and Sanjiv Saran, both members of the Rotary Club of Delhi-Megapolis with whom the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club cooperated in this effort.” He continued, “I look forward to returning to India in February 2012, with another team, when I will have the opportunity to personally visit the project and meet with members of the panchayat (village elders council) to plan for additional projects for the future.”
