Over 1,200 Visit 1815 Restored General Store-Turned-Home
Martintown landmark lovingly restored
Cornwall, ON – Even before doors opened at noon for the come-and-see open house, more than 50 people were waiting on the front lawn. As the day progressed more than 1,200 people would file through the restored 1815 General Store.
Irene Cameron, a long time resident of Long Sault Ontario (near Cornwall) came across the seemingly-abandoned stone home on a country drive through the picturesque Martintown countryside. “For a few weeks I would take note of this house and think what great potential it had and continue to drive on home. On one of these days I noticed a For Sale sign and the rest is history.”
Cameron’s family is only the third to own the property; it was in the family of the previous owners since 1827 and for all but approximately 30 years operated a general store/residence with a family living on one side of the home and the two upper storeys and a general store operating from half of the first floor and the barn. The structure was in dire need of repair when Cameron purchased it and she, along with an “army of superior craftspeople” completely restored the property, now a residential home with a 20’ x 20’ addition.
“We started by completely gutting the home, removing all plaster from the walls to expose the beautiful stone that lay beneath and repointing all of the stone walls. We carefully took down the barn and saved the barn board for the purpose of reclaiming it for certain parts of the construction,” said Cameron.
News spread of the renovation and on the one year anniversary of Cameron owning the property, she hosted an Open House and invited the curious community. “I thought I might see 20 people but I was overwhelmed with joy as I welcomed over 1,200, “ she commented.
During the course of the renovation, Cameron obtained her real estate license and the home is now listed for sale with EXIT Realty Seaway in Cornwall.
“Renovating this home has become a real labour of love and a tremendous source of pride for all those involved. I hope this beautiful landmark will be standing for another 200 years.”
