Farewell to our beloved colleague, Bart Jones

He touched many lives and careers in our real estate community.

Daytona Beach, FL (Grassroots Newswire) April 21, 2014 - Farewell to our beloved colleague who touched many lives and careers in our real estate community. Bart wanted you to remember the last phone call, email or meeting you shared with him. Feel free to share those memories here. Bart made Dee Dee promise to dispense with any service, flowers and gifts. Instead, EXIT Realty Destinations has set up a Widows Fund for Dee Dee, at TD Bank, in the name of Dianne L. Jones. You can call our office for wiring info, or send checks made out to Dianne L. Jones to our office.

Bart Jones

Seaborn Bartow (Bart) Jones III, 83, of Daytona Beach, Florida, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, April 6, 2014.

Born November 2, 1930, Bart hailed from Eustis, Florida.  From 1954, he demonstrated his skillfulness as an educator by teaching not only real estate, but also math, writing composition, and English as a second language throughout his lifetime on the community college and university levels.

In particular, Bart felt passionately about mathematics and the methods used in teaching it.  He believed that most adults found math both mysterious and vague and would avoid the subject strenuously.  He noted that having learned it by rote, most adults relied on hazy memories of problem solving leaving them “no idea of concepts, formulas and equations”.  Before his death, Bart had worked on a manual, with the hope of creating a method that would clarify the approach to understanding this subject.

Having chosen a career in real estate, Bart became a successful agent in both Miami and Ocala.  After hurricane Betsy visited Florida’s shores in 1965, he relocated to New York where he taught Computer Science at the College of Insurance, Pratt Institute, and at New York City College of Technology, City University of New York (CUNY).  Upon retiring from CUNY as Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Director of Academic Computing, Bart returned to Florida to resume his real estate career.

From 1992 through 2005, he operated the well-known Bart Jones’ SCHOOL OF REAL ESTATE, where he shared his knowledge and expertise, educating over 13,000 real estate students.  During that time, he also founded BART JONES REAL ESTATE in Daytona Beach Shores. Over the last five years, he and his wife, Dee Dee, had licensed another EXIT franchise in Daytona.

Bart was Valedictorian of Eustis (FL) HS (1947), attended the University of Florida, the University of Rochester, and graduated from Tulane University (1954). He did post-graduate work at the Sorbonne in Paris, France and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.  A veteran of the Korean War, Bart served his country in the US Navy.

He is predeceased by his father, Seaborn Bartow Jones II; his mother, Ada (née Simmons) Jones; his sister, Gena Lee Shannon; and son, Shawn Jones.

Along with his wife of 49 years, 7 months and 1 day, Dee Dee Jones, Bart is survived by his sons Bart IV, Patrick, and Byron; their son, Marc, his grandson, Ethan Jones; his niece, Cindy Gallagher; and his cousin, Jean Rabe Geisel.  His students and countless friends will miss his wise counsel, keen mathematical mind, the inspiration he gave to so many and stories he would tell them about the good olde days.

He made Dee Dee promise that there would be no service.  Instead he wished everyone would take a moment to remember the last time they spoke, or the last time they met, or the last email they shared.   And, Dee Dee never breaks a promise.
